The removal of any material (e.g., skin tissue, paint, ceramic film, etc.) by means of its interaction with laser energy or power.
Absorb
To transform radiant energy into a different form, usually with a resultant rise in temperature.
Absorbance
The ability of a medium to absorb radiation depending on temperature and wavelength. Expressed as the negative common logarithm of the transmittance.
Absorption Coefficient
The amount of radiant energy absorbed per unit or path-length.
Accessible Emission Limit
Abbreviated AEL. The maximum accessible emission level permitted within a particular laser hazard class.
Note: the laser classifications consist of: Class 1, Class 1M, Class 2, Class 2M, Class 3R, Class 3B, and Class 4. Generally speaking, the potential beam hazard level increases in the same order.
